GUIDLINES
NEMO District Choir Festival
Eligibility: Schools not registered for music activities with MSHSAA cannot participate.
Any student currently enrolled in a choir in their school is eligible to audition for the corresponding choir to their grade. Schools are limited to the following number of students per voice part:
Freshman/Sophomore Choir: twelve (12) students per voice part who can audition (max of 48)
Junior/Senior Choir: eight (8) students per voice part who can audition (max of 32)
2. Students will audition in one voice part only - Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass.
3. The registration window will only be open for a designated amount of time. Registration entries are time stamped. The NEMO District Choir Coordinator is unable to move any students around to accommodate sporting events or other conflicts.
4. Cost for registering each student is $9. Individual schools will be expected to pay for all students who audition or are not cancelled by the date of the audition. Payment may be made to NEMO-MMEA. This money is non-refundable.
A check or PO must be issued to the NEMO District Choir Coordinator before students will be allowed to audition.
5. Preparing for the Audition: There are two parts to the All-District Choir audition.
1) solo audition
2) sight-reading audition
The audition requirements for both choirs will follow the MCDA guidelines (ref. www.moacda.org).
Solo Audition: District guideline state the solo should be between 1.5-2 minutes in length. The solo does not need to be memorized. All students are responsible for their own music, and, of course, no photocopies will be allowed in the audition room. The district will provide judge’s copies and an accompaniment CD.
Acceptable Audition Literature: The solo audition material for each choir should be selected from the following anthologies, with the audition being performed with CD accompaniment.
• First Book Series (Parts 1 & 2) – Soprano, Mezzo, Tenor, or Bass
• Second Book Series (Parts 1 & 2) – Soprano, Mezzo, Tenor, or Bass
• 26 Italian Songs and Arias – High or Low
• 24 Italian Songs and Arias – Medium High or Medium Low
• 15 American Art Songs – High or Low
Sopranos/Tenors are required to use the high versions or part specific versions, as are the Altos/Basses required to use the low or part specific versions.
Copies of the solo literature for adjudicators and accompaniment CDs will be provided by the NEMO District Choir Coordinator. Students will need to provide their own copies for their audition. Note: Photocopied music cannot be used.
Key Signature/Sight-Reading Audition: Sample audition materials and actual sight-reading examples from previous years can be found at
http://moacda.org/mcda-district-choir/. ACDA members have access to many years worth of examples
6. Location and Dates: The audition and rehearsal/performance sites and dates will be determined at the annual director’s meeting the year prior to the event. The NEMO Choir Coordinator will select all clinicians, adjudicators, and room monitors.
7. The Audition Schedule: The schedule will be available the Monday after the registration window closes. Students are expected to sing at their assigned time.
8. Results: Audition results will be posted on the website by the Monday following the auditions. NO additions or substitutions of any kind will be allowed after the posted due date.
9. All-District Choir Festival: There will be two All-District Choirs formed. These choirs are: the Freshman/Sophomore All-District Choir & the Junior/Senior All-District Choir.
The All-District Choir voicings will be as follows:
-Junior/Senior Choir Max. 120 singers 60% female 40% male?
-Freshman/Sophomore Choir Max. 150 singers 60% female 40% male?
This may or may not result in cuts being made to the list of students who audition.
10. Students selected should be present for all scheduled rehearsals. Students will attend the entire rehearsal and be present for the concert. Any absence from any rehearsal will result in the student not being allowed to perform. No alternate members will be selected.
11. Medals for individual members of the Northeast Missouri All-District Choirs will be purchased by the NEMO District Choir Coordinator using funds from the NEMO-MCDA H.S. choral account.
Clinicians/Accompanists
1. There will be one clinician for each choir to be selected by the NEMO District Choir Coordinator. Each clinician will rehearse their respective choir for one day, and conduct a concert following the rehearsal.
2. The fee for each clinician will be $600.00 plus expenses
3. There will be one accompanist for each choir. Each accompanist will be paid $400.00 for their services.
4. Any additional instrumentalists needed will be paid a rate of $25.00. (High school students exempted from payment)
Adjudicators
1. Three judges will be present in each solo room for the Junior/Senior Choir auditions. These judges will be from outside the Northeast District.
2. At least two judges should be used for each solo room for the Freshman/Sophomore Choir auditions. These judges can be from inside the Northeast District. An average of the two judges scores should be used as a third score for score calculation.
3. One judge will be used in each of the Sight-Reading/Key Signature rooms. These judges can be from inside the Northeast District. (Both Choirs)

AUDITION PROCEDURES
AUDITIONS
Solo Audition Procedures
1. The student should report to the correct solo room 5 minutes prior to their posted audition time.
2. The student should have his/her selected solo book (not photocopy) and know the CD number and Track number of his/her song.
3. When the student's audition number is called he/she should walk into the room, tell the room monitor the
CD name/number and Track number and place his/her music on the music stand.
4. The room monitor will tell the judges the student's audition number and play the CD. If the student's song exceeds 2 minutes, the room
monitor will ask the student to stop singing. (No penalty is assessed for singing over 2 minutes).
5. The student will then leave the room and proceed directly to the proper sightreading room.
Sightreading Audition Procedures
1. The student should report to the sightreading room as soon as possible after leaving the solo room.
2. When the student's audition number is called he/she should walk into the room and stand at the music stand facing the judge.
3. The room monitor will tell the judge the student's audition number and press play on the tape player.
4. The following is a copy of the spoken instructions given on the tape. It will greatly benefit the student to know this process.
"MCDA District Choir Audition.....
Key Signatures....Item 1, Identify Number" (blank space for judge to select a key signature and student to respond).
"Item 2, Identify Number" (same blank space).
"Item 3, Melodic Sightreading..." The major scale will be played followed by "You now have 20 seconds to study the melody".
A I-IV-V-I Chord progression will be played to establish the key. The first note will be played and the tape will say:
"One, two, ready, sing". The student should then attempt to perform the exercise on any neutral syllable or using numbers or Solfege.
The tape will then say "Item 4, Part-specific Sightreading"...The major scale will be played followed by "You now have 20 seconds to study your part".
After the silence, the key will be established and the starting pitches given in the BTAS order. The tape will say "One, two, ready, sing".
The student should then attempt to sing his/her part while the tape plays the other three parts.
When finished, the tape will say "Thank You for auditioning."
5. After the audition the student may leave the room.
All-State Choir Audition Procedures
2015 All-State Choir Audition Piece: Exsultate Justi - Viadana
1. When the student's audition number is called he/she should walk to the specified audition room and stand at the music stand.
(Music will be provided.)
2. The room monitor will tell the judges the student's audition number and play the CD. The student should sing his/her part along with the CD.
5. The student will then leave the room and proceed back to the rehearsal room.

The auditions consist of point totals from: 1) student's solo audition on September 17, 2016, 2) the student's sight reading and key signature audition, also performed on September 17, 2016, 3) the student's quartet audition with the music minus one CD (go to www.moacda.org for ordering information).
Please share this information with your students and help us in the NE District to follow all procedures and recommendation, as it will definitely make all our jobs easier.
